Begin at Cape Sanctuary’s nursery, where more than 40,000 native trees are propagated each year from locally sourced seed and carefully grown by our dedicated volunteers.

From there, journey into the sanctuary and visit our remarkable 10.6-kilometre predator-proof fence and a glimpse of extensive restored sand dunes and native forest.

At our secluded forest lodge, enjoy a well-earned morning tea overlooking an incredible coastal vista and, if you're lucky - a visit from one of New Zealand's rarest birds, the takahē. Then join our expert guide for a walk through regenerating native forest - part of an extraordinary landscape containing more than 1.2 million planted native trees.

The experience concludes at an ancient pā where Māori houses once stood. Here stands a pō (Māori carving) of Paratene Te Huia, a revered kaumātua (leader), Cape Sanctuary's initial cultural liaison.
